Things to do in Athens
Athens is the city where you have breakfast with a view of the Parthenon, walk through 2,500 years of history before lunch and catch a ferry to a Greek island the next day.

Athens: more than a stopover
Many people only see Athens from the airport on the way to the islands. That is a shame. The city has some of the most important ancient monuments in the world, but also a lively restaurant scene, rooftop bars with views of the Acropolis and beaches a short tram ride away.
Two or three days is enough for the big sights. Spend the rest of your time walking: through Plaka and Anafiotika below the Acropolis, to the market in Monastiraki, and up Lycabettus Hill at sunset.
Athens is the capital of Greece, and from here ferries and flights go on to Santorini, Crete and the other islands.

The best things to do in Athens
The Acropolis: go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people and less heat. Book tickets ahead in high season.
The Acropolis Museum: a modern museum at the foot of the rock, with glass floors over the excavations.
Plaka and Anafiotika: narrow lanes, steps and white houses that feel like an island village in the middle of the city.
Monastiraki: flea market, street food and rooftop bars with a view.
Lycabettus Hill: the highest point in the city, best at sunset.
The changing of the guard at Syntagma: the Evzones in traditional uniform outside parliament.
Cape Sounion: the Temple of Poseidon on a cliff above the sea, a short drive south of the city.
