Lapland day trip from the UK: is it worth it, or should you stay three nights?

Breakfast in Bristol, a sleigh ride in the Arctic and home for bedtime. A Lapland day trip sounds impossible, and it is certainly long. Here is what you actually get, which UK airports they fly from this December and when it makes more sense to stay three nights.

In short: Lapland day trips from the UK

  • When: in December, in the run-up to Christmas. TUI's day trips run from 5 to 23 December 2026.

  • Where you land: Kittilä or Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, about three and a half hours from the UK.

  • Usually included: flights, transfers, thermal clothing, husky or reindeer rides, lunch and a private meeting with Santa.

  • Booked as: a package with a UK tour operator, so it is ATOL protected.

Our choice: a day trip works for one very excited child and a tight diary. If you can spare three nights, you get daylight, the northern lights and a far calmer visit to Santa. See flight and hotel packages to Rovaniemi from UK airports

What a Lapland day trip includes

A day trip is a charter flight with a full programme on the ground. TUI's version for December 2026 flies to Kittilä and includes meals on the plane, all transfers and thermal clothing. On the ground there are husky and reindeer sleigh rides, mini snowmobiles for children, tobogganing, a hot lunch and a private meeting with Santa with a present for each child.

Other UK operators, from family firms to specialist Santa trip companies, run similar days from regional airports. Compare the time on the ground and what is included rather than the headline: some days include several activities, others mainly a visit to Santa.

Be realistic about the day. You check in very early in the morning, fly about three and a half hours each way, and Finland is two hours ahead of the UK. In December there are only a few hours of daylight in Lapland, so much of the day happens in the blue twilight and under lights. Children usually sleep on the flight home.

Which UK airports have Lapland day trips in 2026?

According to Travel Weekly, TUI's 2026 Lapland day trips fly from London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Cardiff, plus Dublin. All of them land in Kittilä.

If you would rather go independently, there are also scheduled winter flights. Finavia, which runs the Finnish airports, lists direct flights in winter 2026/27 to Rovaniemi from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Southend, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle. It also lists flights to Kittilä from Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester. Not every route runs all season, so check dates before you plan around one.

Day trip or three nights?

  • A day trip is best if your children are young, you cannot take time off school or work, or you mainly want the moment with Santa. It is long and tiring, and you see Lapland mostly in the dark.

  • Three nights in Rovaniemi gives you a husky ride, a reindeer farm and Santa Claus Village at your own pace, plus three evenings with a chance of the northern lights. Visiting Santa's office in Santa Claus Village is free; photos cost extra.

  • The cost is closer than you might think once you compare a day trip for the whole family with a flight and hotel package in early December or January. Prices change daily, so compare the same dates side by side.

Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle about 8 kilometres north of Rovaniemi, a few minutes from the airport, so even a short stay feels easy.

What Picolo would choose

What Picolo would choose: a day trip only if time is the deciding factor. Otherwise three nights in Rovaniemi, at Santa Claus Holiday Village for families or Arctic TreeHouse Hotel for couples.

Why: a day trip spends about seven hours in the air and much of the rest in the dark. Three nights give you daylight activities, a calmer visit to Santa and several chances of the northern lights.

The trade-off: three nights means time off school or work, and December stays book up early. January and February are quieter and darker, which is better for the aurora, but Santa is less of a seasonal event.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Lapland day trip worth it?

It can be, if your children are young and you cannot take several days off. You get a full programme with sleigh rides, snow activities and a meeting with Santa. The downside is a very long day with about seven hours of flying and little daylight. With three nights you see far more of Lapland at a calmer pace.

Which UK airports do Lapland day trips fly from?

TUI's Lapland day trips for December 2026 fly from London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Cardiff, and land in Kittilä. Other operators run day trips from other regional airports, so check what is available from your nearest airport.

How long is the flight from the UK to Lapland?

Flights from the UK to Kittilä or Rovaniemi take about three and a half hours each way. Finland is two hours ahead of the UK, so a morning departure lands around lunchtime local time. On a day trip you spend roughly seven hours in the air in total, which is why many families prefer to stay a few nights.

Can you see the northern lights on a Lapland day trip?

It is possible but unlikely. Day trips spend most of their time on the ground in the middle of the day, and you need a clear, dark sky and some luck with solar activity. If the aurora matters to you, stay at least three nights, ideally away from town lights, to give yourself several evenings of chances.

When should you book a Lapland trip for Christmas?

Book as early as you can. December day trips and Christmas stays in Rovaniemi sell out, especially at weekends and in the week before Christmas. If you are flexible, early December and January are easier to find and often better value. Choose a flight-inclusive package if you want ATOL protection.
