Lunch in Gothenburg: street food, Stora Saluhallen and seafood on Hönö
In Sweden, lunch is a social break in the middle of the working day, and in Gothenburg you are as likely to eat it from a food truck as in a market hall from 1889. These are four places we recommend, from Magasinsgatan in the centre to Tullhuset out on Hönö.
Hassan leans far out of the hatch of Jinx Food Truck on Magasinsgatan in central Gothenburg.
‘I love the contact with customers, and I meet lots of people and tourists here. And the sun is shining,’ says Hassan, looking up with a broad smile.
The square is packed at lunchtime, with Swedes and tourists alike stopping for a quick meal. The streets around it are known for vintage shops and designer clothes.
‘There’s a lot going on here, and the food is damn good,’ Hassan laughs.
Jinx serves New York-inspired pork buns, and the queue outside is long.

In short: lunch in Gothenburg
The quickest lunch in Gothenburg is at Jinx Food Truck at Magasinsgatan 17, which is there all year round. Stora Saluhallen on Kungstorget has around 40 shops and places to eat under one glass roof. If you have half a day, have seafood at Tullhuset out on Hönö.
Our first choice: Clarion Hotel Post, in the old post office by Centralstationen, with a rooftop pool and Stora Saluhallen and Magasinsgatan within walking distance. See available rooms at Clarion Hotel Post

Why Gothenburg eats lunch outdoors
Hassan thinks he knows why street food has caught on in Gothenburg:
‘It’s quick to make, so you get your food fast. And you don’t have to eat indoors. You can take your food to one of the city’s many parks, or sit by the water. That’s what I like most about street food.’
Here are four places we recommend for lunch, and one of them is out in the archipelago.

1. Jinx Food Truck: bao buns on Magasinsgatan
Jinx Food Truck is parked permanently on the square at Magasinsgatan 17, surrounded by outdoor seating. It serves street food and Asian fusion, including pork buns and thaicos. We recommend the thaicos and pork bun combo. Jinx is in Falstaff’s street food guide for the Nordics 2026.
‘If you’re in Gothenburg, you should experience the lunch culture. In Sweden we have a long lunch during working hours, and a hot lunch too. There’s a long tradition of it being an important, social break in the day,’ said Eva Lehmann, a unit manager at Göteborg & Co, the city’s tourist board, when Picolo spoke to her in 2023.
She also recommended street food: ‘There are lots of food trucks around the city, and you can have exotic and varied food experiences.’
2. Tullhuset: fish and shellfish on Hönö
Boats leave Stenpiren for Gothenburg’s archipelago, with its beaches and small island communities. In summer, M/S Kungsö takes you from Stenpiren to Hönö, and the rest of the year there are buses out to Hönö Klåva.
In Hönö Klåva you will find fishing boats and small clothes shops. At the very end of the harbour is Tullhuset, looking out to sea and Vinga lighthouse. The restaurant serves lunch on weekdays, and the menu is fish and shellfish, from fish soup to fresh seafood. Allow half a day including the journey, so this is lunch for a day without fixed plans.
3. Gurras: street food à la carte on Saturdays
According to Eva Lehmann at Göteborg & Co, Gurras is one of the most popular places on Gothenburg’s restaurant scene. The restaurant at Postgatan 16 is between Kronhusbodarna and Nordstan, with a few tables outside. Inside, the kitchen is big and open, and many of the tables are round. The menu is street food with flavours from around the world, served à la carte.
Behind it is chef Gustav Trägårdh, a former Swedish chef of the year and winner of the TV competition Kockarnas Kamp, who also runs BeerNFries. He cooks with local produce in season and wants prices never to get too high. Gurras has 87 points in the Falstaff guide for 2026.
Gurras only opens for lunch on Saturdays, from 12 noon. From Tuesday to Friday it serves dinner from the afternoon. Try the Ostron Japan and the sticky karaage chicken.
4. Stora Saluhallen: lunch under the glass roof
Stora Saluhallen is the city’s market hall on Kungstorget, built in 1888 and 1889. Tourists find their way here, but you will meet at least as many locals. Under the glass roof are around 40 shops and places to eat. Our favourite is the wine bar Bar Bulot. For seafood, Kajutan has fish and shellfish on the menu.
When lunch turns into a longer meal
Gothenburg has five restaurants with one Michelin star in 2026, and Bhoga on Norra Hamngatan is in the Michelin Guide. Read more in Michelin in Gothenburg. For beer with your food, see pubs and bars in Gothenburg. We cover oysters and other seafood in seafood and oysters in Gothenburg.
