Grand Teton
Grand Teton and Jackson Hole: the mountains south of Yellowstone
Jagged peaks rising straight from the plains, moose in the wetlands and a cowboy town with arches of elk antlers. Grand Teton sits right next to Yellowstone, but is a completely different experience. Here is the park, the town and the hotels we recommend.
In Yellowstone it is the ground that astonishes, with boiling springs and geysers. In Grand Teton it is the sky. The range rises abruptly from the flat valley floor, with no foothills in front, and when the morning sun hits the snowy peaks the whole valley falls silent. Many people drive straight through on their way to or from Yellowstone. It is worth staying a few days.

Short answer: why Grand Teton?
Grand Teton National Park lies just south of Yellowstone in Wyoming, and is ideal for hiking, paddling and mountain views. The valley below the peaks is called Jackson Hole, and the town of Jackson is the base for most visitors. Allow two to three days.

Jenny Lake and the trails
At the foot of the mountains lies Jenny Lake, a clear lake where a small boat shuttles you across to the trail to Hidden Falls and the Inspiration Point viewpoint. The walk is short but steep, and the view over the lake is worth every step. Arrive early, as the car park fills before midday.
Mormon Row and the Snake River
In the east of the valley stand the old barns of Mormon Row, built by homesteaders more than a century ago, with the Tetons as a backdrop. It is one of the most photographed scenes in the park. At the Snake River Overlook, photographer Ansel Adams took one of his most famous pictures in 1942.

The wildlife
Moose graze in the wetlands along the rivers, and at dusk you often see deer and bison in the valley. In winter thousands of elk gather on the National Elk Refuge just outside Jackson. Keep your distance, and bring binoculars.
Jackson: the cowboy town
Jackson is small but lively, with wooden boardwalks, saloons and art galleries. On the town square stand the arches of elk antlers that have become its trademark. From Teton Village nearby, an aerial tram takes you up the mountain, with views over the whole valley.
