Rørosmartnan 2027: the Røros winter fair, dates and where to stay

You hear the bells before you see them. The horse-drawn sleighs ride onto Malmplassen, and the Røros winter fair is open. Rørosmartnan 2027 runs from 16 to 20 February, and this is what you need for the five days.

Rørosmartnan was first held in 1854, after a royal decree ruled that the market should begin on the second-to-last Tuesday in February. The rule still stands, and 2027 brings the 172nd fair.

For five days the old mining town becomes one big marketplace, with around 250 traders in the streets and in the Martnashallen Verket Røros hall. Up to 80,000 visitors have come at its busiest, and hotels fill up long before.

In short

Rørosmartnan 2027 runs from Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 February, opening on Malmplassen at noon on the Tuesday. The market is free and open every day. Our hotel pick is Erzscheidergården, a three-minute walk from Malmplassen and the Røros Museum.

The opening on Malmplassen

The opening ceremony starts at noon on Tuesday with song, speeches and dancing. Then the sleigh drivers, Norwegian lasskjørere and Swedish forbønder, ride in with up to 90 horse-drawn teams from Sweden, Østerdalen, Gudbrandsdalen and Gauldal. Many have travelled a long way along the old winter roads to get here.

Arrive early if you want to see the procession up close. In recent years the opening has also been streamed and shown on a big screen indoors.

Trading, food and music

The market is open from 12 to 5pm on Tuesday and from 10 to 5pm from Wednesday to Saturday, in the town centre and in Martnashallen Verket Røros. Stalls sell crafts, clothes and local food, from Røros ice cream and cheese to freshly made waffles.

In the evening people head into the dance halls, cafés and inns, and troubadours play around town. February is cold, often well below zero, so dress in wool and take breaks indoors.

Femundløpet runs the week before, from 10 to 14 February 2027. Arrive early and you can see both, see Femundløpet 2027.
