Rathausmarkt: the historic market
In front of the grand town hall stand around eighty stalls with crafts, decorations and northern German specialities. It is considered the most traditional market in the city, and a good place to start an evening in the centre.
Jungfernstieg and the Alstertanne
Along the promenade by the Binnenalster stand the white tents of the Weißer Zauber market, and out on the water is the Alstertanne, a tall, illuminated tree that has become one of the city’s Christmas symbols. Walk around the lake after dark.

On Spielbudenplatz, in the middle of the Reeperbahn, Santa Pauli is a Christmas market with shows, music and a distinctly erotic twist. It is not for children and not for everyone, but it says a lot about Hamburg’s sense of humour.
Fleetinsel and the smaller markets
On the Fleetinsel, between the canals in the centre, a small maritime market has stalls and lights in the trees. Neighbourhood markets elsewhere, including in Ottensen in the west, feel more local and are cheaper than the centre.
