Algarve and Benagil Cave: cliffs, boat trips and seaside hotels

Golden cliffs, caves you can paddle into and beaches tucked between rock walls. How to explore the Algarve coast and Benagil Cave, and where to stay by the sea.

The kayak slides through an opening in the cliff and the sound of the sea softens. Above you is a round hole in the roof, and sunlight falls on a small beach inside the cave. It is one of the most photographed places in Portugal.

The Algarve is the southernmost part of Portugal, with golden limestone cliffs, caves and beaches. Benagil Cave is the most famous, but the whole coast is worth seeing from the sea. Here is how, and where to stay.

Benagil Cave

The cave is next to the village of Benagil and is best seen from the water, by boat, kayak or paddleboard. The rules on what you can do inside the cave have been tightened in recent years, including landing on the beach. Check what the trip actually includes before you book.

The Seven Hanging Valleys

The clifftop trail from Praia da Marinha to Praia do Vale Centeanes passes arches, caves and viewpoints. It is easy and takes a couple of hours one way.

Ponta da Piedade

Near Lagos, sea stacks and arches rise straight out of the ocean. Take the steps down to the water, or a small boat in between the rocks.

The beaches

Praia da Marinha, Praia da Rocha and Praia do Camilo are among the best known. Many beaches sit between tall rock walls and fill up quickly in summer.
