On Crete, September is warm and settled, and most beaches are quieter than in summer. Domus Renier is in the old town of Chania, with the harbour and lighthouse right outside. Drive south one day to the beaches on the west coast, and come back to a taverna in the lanes in the evening.

September is one of the quietest months on Maui, between the summer holidays and the winter season. Four Seasons sits right on Wailea Beach. Drive up to Haleakalā for sunrise, but remember that the national park requires a reservation. The road to Hana takes a full day.
