Honeymoon

Italy honeymoon: the Amalfi Coast, Rome and the lakes for two

An Italian honeymoon is long lunches above the sea, evening walks through old streets and a glass of wine as the light goes. The Amalfi Coast gives you the views, Rome the history and the food, and Lake Como the calm.

This guide covers where to go, where to stay and when to travel, with the hotels we recommend on the Amalfi Coast, in Rome and on Lake Como. It is part of our guide to honeymoon destinations in Europe and our best honeymoon destinations series.

In short: a honeymoon in Italy

  • Best for: couples who love food, history and sea views.

  • Where: the Amalfi Coast for the views, Rome for the city, Lake Como for calm, and Tuscany for vineyards.

  • When: May, June, September and early October.

  • Flying time: about 2 hours 30 minutes from London and about 3 hours from Oslo to Naples or Rome.

Our first choice: three nights in Rome, then the train south and four or five nights on the Amalfi Coast. Our Amalfi Coast guide and our pick of romantic hotels in Rome show where to stay.

The Amalfi Coast for two

The Amalfi Coast is a string of villages on cliffs above the sea south of Naples. Positano tumbles down to the beach, Amalfi has its cathedral and lemon groves, and Ravello sits high above it all with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Walk the Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Nocelle, take a boat along the coast to Capri, and save the evenings for a terrace with a view.

The road along the coast is narrow and busy in summer, so choose one base and use the boats. Our Amalfi Coast travel guide covers the villages and the beaches.

Rome for two

Rome is the place for a honeymoon full of food and history. Walk from the Spanish Steps to the Pantheon in the evening, eat late in Trastevere and climb the Pincio for the sunset over the domes. Three nights is enough for the highlights without rushing. See our guide to three days in Rome and our Rome travel guide.

Lake Como and Tuscany

Lake Como is the calmest choice, with grand villas, gardens down to the water and boats between Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo. Tuscany is about vineyards, hill towns and long dinners in the countryside, best in a villa or a farmhouse of your own. See Lake Como and Lake Garda, our Tuscany travel guide and our pick of villas in Tuscany.

Where to stay: seven hotels for an Italian honeymoon

Il San Pietro di Positano, Amalfi Coast

Il San Pietro clings to the cliffs just east of Positano, with a lift down to a small beach. Hire a boat for the day, follow the coast towards Amalfi and Capri, and come back to lemon trees, vines and a view across the whole bay. Read more in our best honeymoon destinations.

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Ravello

Caruso is in an old palazzo in Ravello, high above the sea, and is known for a pool that looks straight out over the coast. It suits couples who want quiet evenings away from the crowds by the water. See our Amalfi Coast guide.

Santa Caterina, Amalfi

Santa Caterina stands on the cliff just outside Amalfi, with terraces stepping down to the sea and its own bathing spot by the water. A classic choice for couples who want to swim in the sea every day.

Hotel de Russie, Rome

Hotel de Russie lies between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps, with a terraced secret garden where you eat outdoors under the trees. Most of the old town is within walking distance. See our guide to Hotel de Russie.

Hotel Raphaël, Rome

Ivy covers the facade of Hotel Raphaël, a few steps from Piazza Navona, and inside are paintings and a collection of Picasso ceramics. A good choice for a romantic stay in the heart of the old town. See our pick of romantic hotels in Rome.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como

Grand Hotel Tremezzo is on the water in Tremezzo, looking across the lake to Bellagio. It has a pool by the lake, and the boats leave from a jetty close by.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Lake Como

Villa Serbelloni is a classic grand hotel in Bellagio, right where the lake divides, with gardens running down to the water. See Lake Como and Lake Garda.

Rome and the Amalfi Coast in one trip

The high-speed train from Rome to Naples takes about an hour and ten minutes, and from Naples you continue by car or boat to the coast. Spend three nights in Rome first and finish with four or five nights by the sea. You can then fly home from Naples.

If you would rather combine the lakes and the countryside, fly to Milan for Lake Como and continue by train to Florence for Tuscany.

Getting there from London and Oslo

The flying time is about 2 hours 30 minutes from London and about 3 hours from Oslo to Naples, the airport for the Amalfi Coast. Rome has similar flying times. For Lake Como, fly to Milan, about 1 hour 30 minutes from London and 2 hours 30 minutes from Oslo, and for Tuscany fly to Pisa or Florence. Some routes from Oslo run only in summer.

When to go

May, June, September and early October are the best months for an Italian honeymoon, with warm days and fewer crowds than in July and August. Many hotels on the Amalfi Coast and Lake Como close from November to March. See honeymoon destinations in May, June, September and October.

Our pick on the Amalfi Coast

Caruso: a palazzo and a pool above the coast in Ravello

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, is an old palazzo in Ravello, high above the Amalfi Coast, with gardens and a pool that looks straight out over the sea. Ravello is quieter than the villages by the water, and in the evening you have the terraces and the view almost to yourselves. It is the hotel we recommend for the Amalfi Coast part of an Italian honeymoon.

Our verdict

What Picolo chooses: three nights at Hotel de Russie in Rome, then four or five nights at Caruso in Ravello or Il San Pietro in Positano.

Why: Rome gives you the food and the history, and the Amalfi Coast gives you the sea and the rest at the end of the trip.

The trade-off: the Amalfi Coast is expensive and crowded in high summer, and the road along the coast is slow, so travel in May, June or September.

Frequently asked questions

Is Italy good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Italy combines food, history and sea views with a short flight from the UK and Norway. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most romantic places in Europe, Rome adds the city and the food, and Lake Como gives you calm. It suits couples who want a honeymoon full of experiences without a long-haul flight.

Amalfi Coast or Lake Como for a honeymoon?

Choose the Amalfi Coast for the sea, the boats and the cliffside villages, and Lake Como for calm, gardens and grand villas. The Amalfi Coast is busier and warmer in summer, while Lake Como is quieter in the evenings. Both are at their best in May, June and September.

How many days do you need for an Italian honeymoon?

Plan on seven to ten nights if you want to combine a city and the coast, for example three nights in Rome and four or five on the Amalfi Coast. With only four or five nights, choose one place and stay there. Fewer moves leave more time to rest after the wedding.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Italy?

May, June, September and early October are the best months. The days are warm, and there are fewer people than in July and August, when the Amalfi Coast is at its busiest. From November to March many hotels on the coast and on Lake Como are closed for the winter.
