Sölden: skiing on the Ötztal glaciers and where to stay

Two glaciers, three peaks above 3,000 metres and the World Cup season opener every autumn. This is Sölden in the Ötztal, and the hotels at the heart of its Tyrolean atmosphere.

Sölden lies in the Ötztal in Tyrol, surrounded by some of Austria’s highest mountains. Two glaciers, the Rettenbach and the Tiefenbach, bring snow-sure conditions and a long season, and every autumn the Alpine World Cup season opens here. For many, Sölden is where winter begins.

At the same time, Sölden is known for lively après-ski and a village buzzing with life. Here high mountains and glaciers meet warm Tyrolean hospitality.

The links to the hotels are partner links. If you book through them, Picolo may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. You choose your own dates and room on the hotel page.

The Ötztal glaciers

The Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers give Sölden one of the longest seasons in the Alps. High up, the snow is often good from early autumn until well into spring, and the views across the glaciers are magnificent.

Three peaks above 3,000 metres

Sölden has three peaks above 3,000 metres reached by lift, with viewing platforms offering wide views across the Ötztal Alps. It is one of the highlights of a ski holiday here.

James Bond on the Gaislachkogl

At the top of the Gaislachkogl you will find 007 Elements, an installation inspired by the James Bond film Spectre, which was partly filmed in the area. Next door is the ice Q restaurant, with glass walls and mountain views.

A day in Sölden

The morning starts with a trip up to the glaciers, where the snow is firm and the air clear. Through the day you can ski the long descents back towards the village, with lunch overlooking the Ötztal.

In the afternoon it is time for après-ski, and the village stays lively well into the evening.
