Andermatt: skiing in the heart of the Swiss Alps
An old village at the meeting of three mountain passes, demanding freeriding on the Gemsstock and a ski area stretching over the pass. This is Andermatt, and the hotels where Swiss tradition meets modern luxury.
Andermatt lies where three of Switzerland’s great mountain passes meet: the Gotthard, the Furka and the Oberalp. For centuries travellers have stopped here on their way across the Alps, and the village has kept much of its old character, with stone houses, narrow streets and a church at its heart.
Today Andermatt is also one of Switzerland’s most exciting ski resorts. The ski area stretches over the Oberalp Pass towards Sedrun, and the Gemsstock is famous among freeriders for its steep, snowy terrain.
The links to the hotels are partner links. If you book through them, Picolo may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. You choose your own dates and room on the hotel page.
A village at the crossroads
Andermatt’s history as a hub for travellers can still be felt. Old inns stand alongside new hotels, and the village is lively all year round. The famous Glacier Express also passes through Andermatt on its way between Zermatt and St. Moritz.
The Gemsstock: for the brave
The Gemsstock rises directly above the village and is known for demanding descents and freeride terrain. Many experienced skiers come precisely for the snow and the steep mountainsides. The view from the top is magnificent, with mountains in every direction.
The slopes towards Sedrun
On the other side of the valley, the ski area stretches over the Oberalp Pass towards Sedrun and Disentis. Here you will find wide, varied runs for most levels, and the train connection makes it easy to get back.
A day in Andermatt
The morning might start with a trip up the Gemsstock for those seeking a challenge, or over towards Sedrun for those who want long, wide runs. Lunch is taken at a mountain restaurant overlooking the pass.
In the afternoon it is time for the spa, a stroll through the old village and a good dinner of Swiss food.
