Senja, Norway: Segla, the scenic route and Norway in miniature
Peaks plunging into the sea, white beaches and fishing villages at the end of the world. How to experience Senja, from the Segla hike and the National Tourist Route to the aurora and the midnight sun, and where to stay.
You round a bend on the outer side of Senja, and suddenly Segla is there, a sharp peak rising straight out of the fjord like a sail. Behind you lies a white beach without a soul. It is quiet, except for the waves. Senja is called Norway in miniature, and it is easy to see why.
Senja is Norway’s second largest island, a couple of hours south of Tromsø. Here are the best things to do, from summit hikes and the scenic route to fishing villages, the aurora and the midnight sun, and the hotels to stay in.

Segla and Hesten
Segla is Senja’s most famous mountain, with a sheer face dropping straight into the Mefjord. The hike to the top is short but steep and exposed. For the classic photo of Segla, hike Hesten, the neighbouring summit across the valley. Both take about three to four hours.
The National Tourist Route Senja
The scenic route follows the outer side of the island, from Gryllefjord to Botnhamn. Stop at the Bergsbotn viewing platform and the Tungeneset rest area, facing the Okshornan peaks known as the Devil’s Teeth.
Husøy and the fishing villages
Husøy is a fishing village on a small island, linked to Senja by a causeway. Mefjordvær and Gryllefjord are other classic villages, where you can eat fresh fish and watch the boats come in.
The northern lights and the midnight sun
Senja lies right under the auroral oval, with little light pollution in winter. In summer the sun does not set from late May to mid July, and you can hike summits in the middle of the night.
Where to stay on Senja
Senja has many small places to stay. Stay by the fishing villages on the outer side to be close to the mountains, or in Finnsnes for shops and restaurants nearby.
