Picolo recommends · Hacienda in the Yucatán
Chablé Yucatán: a hacienda, jungle and private pools outside Mérida
An old hacienda in the Yucatán jungle, with casitas, hammocks over the pool and a spa worth the trip on its own.

Cenote
The cenotes are the Yucatán’s freshwater wells.
It is hot and humid, and the jungle smells of rain. You lie in the hammock above your own pool and listen to the birds in the trees, while the stone walls of the old hacienda show between the leaves.
Chablé Yucatán is in Chocholá outside Mérida, in a restored hacienda with casitas scattered through the jungle. It is a place for anyone who wants luxury without seeing a single high-rise.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we like Chablé
The hacienda has 40 rooms, all on one level, spread across a large garden and jungle. Many of the casitas have their own pool.
The spa is the reason many come, and Ixiim serves Mexican dinners. A full breakfast is included every morning.

Chablé Yucatán: casitas, spa and Mexican cooking
The casitas are modern and bright, with large windows, private terraces and often a pool. Paths wind between them through the garden, past old stone arches and water.
The spa offers massages, body wraps and facials. The hotel has two restaurants, two bars, an outdoor pool and a tennis court, and sits next to a golf course.

Things to do in the Yucatán
Mérida is one of Mexico’s finest colonial cities, with Paseo de Montejo and colourful streets, and it is a short drive away. The Yucatán is also known for its cenotes, natural wells where you can swim in clear fresh water.
The Maya cities of Uxmal and Chichén Itzá are popular day trips. A hire car or a driver is easiest, as the hacienda is in the countryside.
