The best hotels in Corfu: seven places to stay, old town to west coast

On the Spianada, the great green square in the middle of Corfu Town, men in white are playing cricket while waiters under the arcades of the Liston serve coffee and ginger beer. It is a legacy of the British, who ran the island for half a century. The Venetians built the fortresses, the French the arcades. Corfu is Greece with a different face, greener and more layered than most of the islands.

To experience the town and its food, stay in the old town of Corfu Town. Families and anyone after beach and pool will be happiest on the east coast north or south of town, close to the airport. For dramatic coves and sunsets, Paleokastritsa on the west coast is the place.

A mansion with a garden

Siorra Vittoria Boutique Hotel occupies an old mansion in the old town, with few rooms, antique furniture and a garden where breakfast is served beneath the trees.

It gets our vote as the design pick and a place for anyone who wants to stay quietly in the heart of the old town. It is well suited to couples and lovers of small hotels with history. There is no pool or beach, so you will take a taxi or bus to swim, but the kantounia restaurants and coffee on the Liston are around the corner.

It is a good fit for couples and families who want luxury and space, with town a fifteen-minute drive away, and it works well for longer stays. Rates are high and the resort is large, but the villas give privacy, and the restaurants are good enough that you rarely need to leave.

  • Family pick

All-inclusive with good food

Ikos Dassia stands on the beach at Dassia, north of town, with large pools, a beach and an all-inclusive offer in which several restaurants hold a high standard. There are separate areas for families and adults.

It earns our family pick, because children have plenty to do and the food is better than at most resorts. It also suits couples who would rather not think about the bill. It is large and popular, so book early. Boats and buses run from Dassia into town.

An old villa by the sea

Domes Miramare sits by the sea at Moraitika, south of town, built around an old villa with gardens and rooms and suites, many with a private pool. The style is elegant and relaxed.

It is our romantic pick, with calm, polished service and the sea right outside. It is made for couples who want luxury without a huge resort, with beach, pool and spa together. Town is about half an hour by car, and Moraitika village has tavernas for dinner by the water.

How Picolo chooses

Our editors pick every hotel and experience themselves, and most of them we have tried. Nobody can pay to be included or ranked higher. When you book through our links, Picolo earns a small commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we write.

Corfu lies at the far north-west of Greece, just off the coast of Albania, and is one of the greenest Greek islands, full of olive groves, cypresses and mountains. The capital, Corfu Town, has a UNESCO-listed old town with two Venetian fortresses, narrow lanes, the arcades of the Liston and the vast Spianada square.

The island is bigger than many expect, and driving from north to south takes about two hours. The east coast facing the mainland has calm beaches and most of the resorts, while the west coast has dramatic coves, waves and sunsets. Corfu has long been a favourite with British travellers, and flights take around three hours. We have chosen seven hotels in town, along the east coast and on the west coast. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

How to choose a hotel in Corfu

  • East or west: the east coast has calm water and most hotels, the west coast has waves, coves and sunsets. They are about an hour's drive apart.

  • The airport is in town: hotels near Corfu Town are quick to reach, while the far north and south can take an hour or more.

  • Hire a car: the roads are narrow and winding, but a car opens up the coves and mountain villages. Allow more time than the map suggests.

  • All-inclusive or not: resorts outside town are often sold all-inclusive. In town and the villages it is easy to eat well out.

  • A short season: many hotels open from May to October. The town stays open all year, but beach hotels close in winter.

The areas

  • Corfu Town: Corfu's old town is one of the best preserved in Greece, with Venetian houses, narrow lanes known as kantounia, churches and museums. The Liston and Spianada are the places for coffee and people-watching.

  • The east coast north of town: North of town lie a string of peninsulas and beaches with some of the island's best resorts, a short drive from both town and airport. The water is calm and shallow.

  • South of town and the west coast: South of town are calm beaches and villages around Moraitika and Benitses. On the west coast is Paleokastritsa, with steep cliffs, green hills and coves of clear water.
