In short: Sweden's Christmas markets in 2026

Sweden's best known Christmas market is on Stortorget in Stockholm, open every day from 21 November to 23 December 2026. Liseberg in Gothenburg celebrates Christmas from 14 November to 30 December. The best weekend is 27 to 29 November, when almost every major market is open.

Our first choice: Check availability and prices at Victory Hotel

In Sweden, Christmas starts in November. Squares fill with red wooden stalls, glögg warms in big copper pots and saffron buns are piled high. Each market has its own character, from castle courtyards and glassworks to open air museums and medieval walls. Choose your city for the mood you want, and your weekend for the markets that are open.

Which weekend should you choose?

  • 27 to 29 November: The best weekend. Stortorget, Skansen, Skokloster and Sigtuna are open in Stockholm, and Liseberg, Kronhuset and Haga in Gothenburg.

  • 4 to 6 December: Choose Visby, Uppsala or Jamtli. In Stockholm, Nordiska museet holds its Christmas market on Saturday 5 December.

  • 11 to 13 December: A quieter weekend with Stortorget, Skansen and Sigtuna, plus Liseberg and Haga on the west coast.

  • 18 to 20 December: The last weekend for Skansen, Haga, Kosta and Malmö.

To combine two cities, the train between Stockholm and Gothenburg takes around three hours. That gives you Stortorget on Friday and Liseberg on Saturday.

Stockholm or Gothenburg?

Stockholm suits you if you want the classic Christmas market. Stortorget has red stalls between old merchant houses, and Skansen shows Christmas as it was celebrated a century ago.

Gothenburg suits you if you want more lights and more pace. Liseberg is an amusement park full of Christmas lights, and Haga and Kronhuset have markets with local makers.

Where to stay

Stay close enough to walk back after the glögg. In Stockholm that means Gamla Stan, and in Gothenburg the area around Central Station and Drottningtorget. Both hotels below score above 9 with guests on Hotels.com.

Tips for Sweden's Christmas markets

  • Try glögg and saffron buns: Both are found at every Swedish market, and many stalls sell glögg without alcohol.

  • Arrive early: It is dark before half past three in December, and smaller markets often close at 4pm.

  • Book Christmas dinners early: The traditional Christmas buffets in Stockholm and Gothenburg are often fully booked by November.

  • Bring a card: Most stalls take cards, but a few small markets are cash only.

Our recommendation

Grand Hôtel: Christmas buffet with a view of the Royal Palace

Grand Hôtel stands on Blasieholmen, looking across the water to the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan. To reach the Christmas market on Stortorget, you cross the bridge and walk into the narrow streets of the old town. The Swedish Christmas buffet in the Veranda restaurant is a tradition for many Stockholmers, so book a table when you book your room. This is the hotel for a classic Stockholm Christmas, with lights on the water and Gamla Stan just over the bridge.

Our recommendation

With only one weekend, choose Stockholm and 27 to 29 November. Stortorget, Skansen and the castle market at Skokloster are all open. Stay in Gamla Stan and you can walk to the market every evening.

For more lights and a theme park, choose Gothenburg and Liseberg. Hotel Eggers by Central Station makes it easy to reach Liseberg, Kronhuset and Haga.
