Gothenburg Christmas markets: Haga, Kronhuset and the markets in town
Cinnamon buns in Haga, Christmas crafts in the 17th-century stalls by Kronhuset and seafood in the Fish Church. These are Gothenburg’s Christmas markets beyond Liseberg, the food to try, a cosy place to eat afterwards and the hotels within walking distance.
Snow rarely reaches Gothenburg in December, but it hardly matters. The city lights itself: garlands over Haga Nygata, candles in the windows of old wooden houses and an avenue of lights along the canals. Gothenburg likes to call itself Sweden’s Christmas city, and while most visitors come for Liseberg, some of the cosiest markets are in the centre.

Christmas in Haga: cinnamon buns and wooden houses
Haga is Gothenburg’s oldest suburb, with cobbled streets and the typical landshövdingehus, three-storey houses with a stone ground floor and two wooden floors above. In December Haga Nygata fills with stalls, decorations in the windows and the smell of fresh baking. Stop at Café Husaren, famous for a cinnamon bun the size of a plate.
Kronhusjul: crafts in the 17th-century stalls
Kronhuset and Kronhusbodarna date from the 1600s and are among the city’s oldest buildings. At Christmas the small stalls and the old hall fill with crafts, decorations and delicacies. The market is small and atmospheric, in the middle of town and a couple of minutes from the canal.
Liseberg: the Christmas village
For many visitors Liseberg is the reason to come to Gothenburg in December. The park fills with lights, stalls and several Christmas markets, and the rides keep turning in the cold.
What to try
Glögg: the Swedish mulled wine, often served with gingerbread.
Lussekatter: golden saffron buns, especially around St Lucia’s Day on 13 December.
Julbord: the Swedish Christmas buffet with herring, salmon, Jansson’s temptation and ham, served at many restaurants and hotels in December.
Seafood: prawns and oysters from the west coast, never fresher than here.

A cosy place to eat afterwards
Gothenburg is a food city, and December is high season for julbord. If you prefer seafood, Feskekôrka, the old fish hall shaped like a church, is the place to start. See all our favourites in our guide to food and restaurants in Gothenburg.
