Bansko ski guide: the slopes, the gondola and where to stay
Bansko is Bulgaria’s biggest ski resort, an old mountain town with a gondola straight up into the Pirin mountains. Here is what to expect on the slopes, how to get there from the UK and the hotels closest to the lift.
7 November 202610 min
At half past eight the queue for the gondola in Bansko stretches back towards the town. Up at Banderitsa, the Pirin mountains open up and the pistes run through the pine trees. Lunch costs a fraction of what you would pay in the Alps. Bansko is Bulgaria’s biggest ski resort, and the most lively in the evening.
In short: Bansko

The slopes
The gondola runs from the edge of the town up to Banderitsa, where most of the lifts and pistes start. The skiing suits intermediates best, with long, wide runs through the forest and a few steeper pistes higher up. The long run back down to the town is the main way home at the end of the day.
The gondola opened at 8.30 and closed at 17.00 in the 2025/26 season, according to the resort. The 2025/26 season opened on 13 December.
The town
Bansko is a real town, not a purpose-built resort. The old centre has cobbled streets, stone houses and mehanas, traditional taverns with grilled meat and live music. After skiing, the bars along the road to the gondola fill up quickly.

Picolo would choose
Picolo would choose: the Kempinski for location, or Amira for a smaller hotel with the same short walk to the gondola.
Why: in Bansko, being near the gondola saves you the queue and the bus every morning. The trade-off: the hotels next to the lift cost more than those in the old town. Comparing resorts? See ski holidays in Bulgaria.
