Plovdiv is small enough to walk across in half an hour, so the hotel you choose decides how much you walk and how quiet your evenings are. We stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton, at the foot of the old town, and walked everywhere. All eight hotels here have at least 50 reviews and a guest rating of 8.8 or more on Hotels.com.

In short: the best hotels in Plovdiv

  • Where we stayed: DoubleTree by Hilton Plovdiv Center, about 400 metres from the Roman theatre.

  • Inside the old town: Family Hotel at Renaissance Square and Hotel Evmolpia, both rated 9.8.

  • With a spa: Radisson Hotel Plovdiv, by the river.

  • Outside the centre: ESTE Park Hotel and Hotel Jägerhof, both rated 9.6.

Worth watching

The Emporium Hotel Plovdiv, part of the MGallery collection, has a perfect score on Hotels.com but still too few reviews for our list. We will add it when it passes 50.

Picolo would choose

Picolo would choose: the DoubleTree by Hilton, where we stayed, or a night inside the old town at Family Hotel at Renaissance Square.

Why: both put the old town, the Roman theatre and Kapana on your doorstep. The trade-off: the hotels in the old town are small and book up early. Read our Plovdiv travel guide and the route through Plovdiv Old Town.

Frequently asked questions about hotels in Plovdiv

What is the best hotel in Plovdiv?

We stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Plovdiv Center and would book it again. It is modern and quiet, about 400 metres from the Roman theatre, and rated 9.6 out of 10 by guests. If you want to sleep inside the old town, Family Hotel at Renaissance Square and Hotel Evmolpia both score 9.8.

Where is the best area to stay in Plovdiv?

Stay in the centre, between the old town, Kapana and the main pedestrian street. From there you can walk to the Roman theatre, the stadium and the restaurants in a few minutes. The hotels north of the river and in the suburbs are fine if you have a car, but you will spend more time getting around.

How many nights do you need in Plovdiv?

Two nights is enough for the old town, the Roman theatre and an evening in Kapana. Three nights gives you time for a day trip to Bachkovo Monastery or a winery in the Thracian Valley. Plovdiv also works as an overnight stop before or after a ski week in Pamporovo, less than two hours away by road.
