The best hotels in Cyprus: ten places to stay, coast to mountains

Late in the afternoon at Cape Greco, the limestone cliffs turn gold and swimmers climb the iron ladders out of water so clear you can count the stones on the bottom. An hour inland, the Troodos mountains are cool and green with pine. Where you stay in Cyprus decides which of these islands you get.

For calm, history and nature, stay around Paphos or near the Akamas peninsula in the far west. For a city, restaurants and a beach in one place, Limassol is the strongest base. Families and beach lovers chasing the clearest water should head east to Ayia Napa and Cape Greco.

Paphos and Akamas

1. Anassa

  • Village layout
  • Sandy bay
  • Akamas peninsula
  • Couples

A white village above Chrysochou Bay

Anassa sits near Latchi in the far north-west of the island, built like a small village with whitewashed houses, lanes and a chapel around a square. It runs down to a sandy beach on the bay, with the Akamas peninsula on one side.

It is one of the best-known luxury hotels in Cyprus, and its distance from everything else is the point. Couples and anyone who prefers nature and quiet to nightlife will be happiest here. If you want to see much of the island, expect long drives, though the Akamas trails and the little harbour at Latchi are right on hand.

Almyra

Paphos and Akamas

2. Almyra

  • Seafront
  • Garden pools
  • Modern design
  • Paphos harbour

Bright design by Paphos harbour

Almyra sits on the seafront in Paphos, a few minutes' walk from the harbour and the fort. Rooms are light and modern, and the gardens and pools run right down to the water.

It makes a strong first base because you can walk to restaurants and the Roman mosaics while still feeling like you are at a resort. It works for families and couples alike. The shoreline in front is rocky, so most of the swimming happens in the pools.

Annabelle

Paphos and Akamas

3. Annabelle

  • Promenade
  • Palm gardens
  • Waterfall pools
  • Classic style

A classic grand hotel on the promenade

Annabelle stands next to Almyra along the promenade to the harbour, in large gardens of palms and pools with waterfalls. The style is more traditional, with warm colours and formal service.

It is a strong pick for adults and anyone who likes an established hotel with familiar rhythms and a good restaurant. Families and lovers of modern design will be happier next door. The location makes an evening stroll into town easy, past fish tavernas towards the archaeological park and its mosaics.

Columbia Beach Resort

Limassol and Pissouri

4. Columbia Beach Resort

  • Sandy bay
  • Kids' club
  • Families
  • Pissouri village

The bay at Pissouri

Columbia Beach Resort sits on Pissouri Bay between Limassol and Paphos, with a long sandy beach and green hills around it. The village of Pissouri perches on the ridge behind.

The bay is sheltered and calm, there is a kids' club, and the resort never feels crowded, which is why it is our family pick. Couples who want a beach without a city will like it too. Allow half an hour by car to reach either town.

Pissouri Bay, Limassol district, Cyprus

Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa

Limassol and Pissouri

5. Parklane

  • Beachfront
  • Several pools
  • Large spa
  • Kids' club

A big resort on Limassol's east side

Parklane sits on the beach east of central Limassol, with extensive gardens, several pools and a large spa. Rooms are contemporary and pale, with balconies towards the sea.

It appeals to families and travellers who want everything in one place, from a kids' club to a choice of restaurants. The centre is a short taxi ride away. If you are after a small, personal hotel, this is too big, and in high season the pools are busy.

East of the centre, Limassol, Cyprus

Amara

Limassol and Pissouri

6. Amara

  • Design hotel
  • Sea views
  • Beachfront
  • Couples

Clean architecture on the shore

Amara stands on the Limassol coast, with crisp, bright architecture and almost every room facing the sea. Inside it is pared back and elegant, with marble, timber and wide expanses of glass.

This is the island's design choice and one of the newest luxury hotels in Limassol. It is well suited to couples and anyone who likes a city hotel on a beach. The mood is grown-up and a touch formal, so it is not ideal for small children.

Four Seasons Hotel Limassol

Limassol and Pissouri

7. Four Seasons Limassol

Service on the seafront

Four Seasons sits on the beach east of Limassol and is one of the city's longest established luxury hotels. Rooms are spacious, and the gardens hold several pools with direct access to the sea.

The service keeps guests coming back, along with the restaurants and spa. It works for families and couples who want reliable quality. The building is more traditional than its neighbours, so if you want the latest look, choose Amara instead.

Grecian Park Hotel

Ayia Napa and Cape Greco

8. Grecian Park

  • Cape Greco
  • Clifftop
  • Sea views
  • Coastal walks

The view from the cliff

Grecian Park sits on the cliffs at Cape Greco, between Ayia Napa and Protaras, with sea views from most rooms. A path leads down to a small beach below the hotel.

This is our value pick: sea views and a peaceful setting in nature for less than you would pay in Limassol. Couples and walkers will enjoy the clifftop trails. Without a car the evenings feel a little remote, but with one you are ten minutes from Protaras or Ayia Napa, and the sea caves are close by.

Cape Greco, Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Alion Beach Hotel

Ayia Napa and Cape Greco

9. Alion Beach

  • On the beach
  • Balconies
  • Garden to the sand
  • East coast

A calmer beach in Ayia Napa

Alion Beach stands on a beach in Ayia Napa, away from the centre and its clubs. Rooms have balconies, and the gardens lead straight onto the sand.

It suits families and couples who want the clear east coast water without sleeping in the middle of the party. The centre's restaurants and bars are a short taxi ride away. The style is more classic than contemporary, and it is at its best for a simple beach holiday.

Ayia Napa, Famagusta district, Cyprus

Casale Panayiotis

Troodos

10. Casale Panayiotis

  • Troodos
  • Stone houses
  • Mountain village
  • Spa

Stone houses in a mountain village

Casale Panayiotis is made up of restored stone houses in the village of Kalopanayiotis in Troodos, with rooms scattered through the village and a spa down in the valley. Views stretch across the slopes to an old monastery.

It shows a different Cyprus and pairs well with a few days on the coast. Couples who want to walk, eat local food and taste wine from the mountain vineyards will love it. The paths between buildings are steep, and the beach is more than an hour's drive away.

How Picolo chooses

Our editors pick every hotel and experience themselves, and most of them we have tried. Nobody can pay to be included or ranked higher. When you book through our links, Picolo earns a small commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we write.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, and the drive from Paphos in the west to Ayia Napa in the east takes about two hours. The island is divided, and this guide covers the Republic of Cyprus in the south, where flights from the UK land at Larnaca and Paphos. They drive on the left, plugs are British, and the season is long: many people swim from April into November.

Each stretch of coast has its own character. Paphos is historic and calm, Limassol is a modern city with a marina and a serious restaurant scene, and Ayia Napa means beaches by day and clubs in high summer. Inland, the Troodos mountains hide villages and vineyards. We have chosen ten hotels across coast and mountains and explain who each one suits. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

How to choose a hotel in Cyprus

  • Match the airport to the coast: Paphos airport suits the west, Larnaca suits Limassol and the east. Getting this right saves a long transfer.

  • Hire a car: the best beaches, Akamas and the mountain villages are far easier by car, and driving on the left will feel familiar.

  • Mind Ayia Napa in summer: the centre is a party town in July and August. Stay outside it, or out at Cape Greco, if you want sleep.

  • Sand or cliff: some hotels sit on a sandy beach, others on rocks with swimming ladders and pools. Check which you are getting.

  • Winter sun, cool sea: December to March is mild but the sea is chilly. Choose a heated pool if you travel then.

The areas

  • Paphos and Akamas: Paphos is a harbour town with Roman mosaics and a small fort at the water's edge. North of it lies the Akamas peninsula, a protected landscape of gorges and coves with no big resorts.

  • Limassol and Pissouri: Limassol is the second city of Cyprus, with an old town, a marina and a long seafront promenade. The big luxury hotels line the coast east of the centre, while Pissouri Bay lies quietly to the west on the road to Paphos.

  • Ayia Napa and Cape Greco: The east coast has the whitest sand and the most turquoise water in Cyprus. Ayia Napa is known for its summer nightlife, while Cape Greco is a protected headland of cliffs, sea caves and walking paths.

  • Troodos: An hour inland from Limassol rise the Troodos mountains, with pine forests, monasteries and villages of stone houses. It is cooler up here in summer, and autumn brings the grape harvest.

Paphos for calm and history, Limassol for a city with restaurants, and Ayia Napa or Cape Greco for the best beaches.

Paphos for the west coast, Larnaca for Limassol and the east. Larnaca to Limassol takes around 45 minutes by car.

Not if you plan to stay at your hotel, but for Akamas, Troodos and the best beaches a car is simplest. Cyprus drives on the left.
