Why the Philippines should be on your list

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands between the South China Sea and the Pacific. It is known for its beaches, its warm and welcoming people and some of the finest diving and snorkelling in Asia. English is widely spoken, which makes it easy to travel around.

The most famous island for a holiday is Palawan, with its limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons and white beaches. Other favourites include Cebu, Bohol and Siargao.

Things to do in the Philippines

Go island hopping by traditional bangka boat around El Nido or Coron, dive with turtles and reef sharks, and snorkel over coral gardens and wartime shipwrecks. On Bohol, see the Chocolate Hills and the tiny tarsiers, and on Siargao, ride the waves at one of Asia's best surf spots.

Manila, the capital, is often just a stopover, but its historic walled city of Intramuros and food scene are worth a day if you have time.

Palawan: private islands and luxury resorts

Palawan is the island most people dream of when they think of the Philippines. In the north, El Nido and Coron are bases for boat trips among lagoons and limestone islands, while the Puerto Princesa Underground River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For a truly special stay, Picolo recommends Club Paradise, a luxury resort on a private, protected island off Palawan.
