Why Holbox feels like a secret

Isla Holbox is a long, narrow island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon. It is part of the Yum Balam nature reserve, and there are no cars on the island; people get around on foot, by bicycle or in golf carts.

The village is small and colourful, with murals, beach bars and seafood restaurants, and the atmosphere is far more relaxed than in Cancún or Tulum. Picolo calls it Mexico's unknown beach paradise.

Things to do in Holbox

Spend your days swimming in the calm, shallow sea, lazing in a hammock over the water and cycling along the beach to Punta Mosquito, where flamingos are often seen. At sunset, rent a paddleboard or join the crowds on the beach for one of the best views in Mexico.

Boat trips take you to Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros, a bird sanctuary in the lagoon, and to cenotes on the mainland. At night, if you are lucky, you can see bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water.

Swimming with whale sharks

From around June to September, whale sharks gather in the waters off Holbox to feed, and licensed boat tours take small groups out to swim alongside the world's largest fish. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and responsible operators follow strict rules to protect the animals.

Holbox: frequently asked questions

How do you get to Isla Holbox?

Fly to Cancún, then drive or take a bus to the small port of Chiquilá, around two to three hours away. From there, passenger ferries cross to Holbox in about 20 minutes. Cars must be left in Chiquilá, as there are no cars on the island.

How many days do you need on Holbox?

Three to four days is ideal to relax, explore the beaches, take a boat trip and enjoy the sunsets. In whale shark season, allow an extra day in case a tour is cancelled because of weather.

Is Holbox better than Tulum?

They are very different. Tulum has Mayan ruins, cenotes and a lively boutique hotel and restaurant scene, while Holbox is quieter, car-free and all about nature and relaxing. Many travellers visit both.

Is there a cash machine on Holbox?

There are a few cash machines on Holbox, but they can run out of money in busy periods, and not every business accepts cards. It is wise to bring some Mexican pesos with you from the mainland.
