The best hotels in Dubrovnik: nine places to stay, walls to clifftops

At eight in the morning, the city walls of Dubrovnik are almost empty. You walk the old stones with the sea on one side and a jumble of terracotta roofs on the other, hearing nothing but gulls and a church bell. Three hours later the walls are packed with cruise passengers. In Dubrovnik everything depends on being in the right place at the right time, and your hotel is the first step.

To experience the Old Town without the crowds, stay inside the walls or just outside the Pile Gate. For swimming and views back to the city, Ploče east of the Old Town is best. Families and anyone wanting more space for their money will find good beach hotels in Lapad and Cavtat.

A baroque palace in the heart of town

The Pucić Palace occupies a baroque palace close to Luža Square and Gundulić Square with its morning market. Rooms have antique furniture, wooden floors and rich fabrics, and some look across the rooftops and churches.

It appeals to travellers who want to live inside history and have the Old Town to themselves early and late. It is a good choice for couples. There is no pool or beach and rates are high, so it is the location and atmosphere you are paying for. The Stradun and the old harbour are two minutes from the door.

A roof terrace above the Old Town

Hotel Stari Grad is a small hotel in an old building near the Pile Gate, with few rooms and a roof terrace looking across the rooftops, bell towers and city walls.

It gets our vote as the value pick inside the walls, putting you in the heart of the Old Town with one of the best terraces in the city for less than the palace hotels. It is well suited to couples. Rooms are simple and small, and there are stairs up to reception and the rooms. Take a drink up to the terrace in the evening, when the light catches the bell towers.

The area around the Pile Gate is busy by day, so ask for a garden-facing room if you want quiet. In the evening you can walk to dinner in the Old Town and back without a taxi.

Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik stands in Ploče, on the cliffs east of the Old Town, looking across the water to the walls and harbour. It has bathing platforms, a pool and spa, and the Old Town is a ten-minute walk away.

It takes our design pick and perhaps the best place to see Dubrovnik from. It is a good fit for couples and families who want swimming and sightseeing in one stay. Rooms facing the Old Town cost more and are worth it. Banje beach, one of the city's most popular, is just below.

A boat to the harbour from the cliffs

Villa Dubrovnik sits on the cliffs further east in Ploče, with white terraces stepping down to the sea and views of the Old Town and Lokrum island. The hotel runs its own boat to the old harbour.

It earns our romantic pick, quiet, private and in one of the loveliest positions near the city. It works best for couples who want luxury and stillness. There are steps and lifts down to the sea, and it is not designed for families. Rates are high, but the boat makes it easy to pair calm days with evenings in town.

How Picolo chooses

Our editors pick every hotel and experience themselves, and most of them we have tried. Nobody can pay to be included or ranked higher. When you book through our links, Picolo earns a small commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we write.

Dubrovnik sits at the far south of Croatia, on a narrow strip of coast between the mountains and the Adriatic. The Old Town is enclosed by walls almost two kilometres long, and within them lie the main street, the Stradun, churches, monasteries and steep stepped lanes of polished limestone. The whole Old Town is UNESCO listed, and plenty of visitors recognise it from Game of Thrones.

The city is small, popular and expensive in high season, and cruise ships shape the Old Town in the middle of the day. That makes location crucial: stay inside the walls and you have the city to yourself in the early morning and evening, while the clifftop hotels outside offer swimming and views. Flights from the UK take under three hours. We have chosen nine hotels in the Old Town, just outside its gates, in Lapad and in Cavtat. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

How to choose a hotel in Dubrovnik

  • The Old Town is car-free and steep: hotels inside the walls are reached on foot, often up steps. Pack light or choose a hotel by the Pile Gate.

  • Beach or city: the Old Town has few places to swim. Hotels in Ploče and Lapad have bathing platforms or small coves beneath the cliffs.

  • Cruise ships: check the cruise calendar. On the busiest days, see the Old Town before ten and after six.

  • Buses and boats: city buses link Lapad and the Old Town well, and boats run from Cavtat and Lapad to the old harbour.

  • A short swimming season: the sea is warm enough from June to October. In winter the city is quiet and some hotels close.

The areas

  • The Old Town: Within the walls lie the Stradun, the Sponza Palace, the cathedral and hundreds of lanes and stairways. It is car-free, and in the evening it falls quiet once the day visitors leave.

  • Pile and Ploče: The Pile Gate to the west is the main entrance to the Old Town, with buses and taxis right outside. East of the Old Town lies Ploče, with clifftop hotels looking back at the walls and the harbour.

  • Lapad and Cavtat: Lapad is a peninsula west of the Old Town, with pine woods, promenades and beaches, and good bus links into the city. Cavtat is a small harbour town south of Dubrovnik, close to the airport, with boats running into the Old Town.
