Hotel Stari Grad
Climb the last flight of stairs at dusk and the whole Old Town is laid out below the roof terrace: tiled roofs, bell towers and the walls.
The best thing about Hotel Stari Grad is up top. From the terrace you look across a sea of orange tiles to the towers and the city walls, and in the evening the stone turns gold before the lights come on.
Below it sits a small hotel in an old house, a short walk inside the Pile Gate. There are only a handful of rooms, so it feels more like staying in a townhouse than a hotel, and the Old Town starts on the doorstep.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Stari Grad
It is our value pick inside the walls. You get the heart of the Old Town and a terrace view that rivals the grand hotels, for noticeably less than the palace addresses nearby.
Rooms are plain and compact, and there are plenty of stairs between the street, reception and your bed. With heavy luggage or limited mobility, look at Hilton Imperial outside the gate instead.
What you get
- Roof terrace over the Old Town
- Only a handful of rooms
- Inside the Pile Gate
- Drinks on the terrace at sunset
- Simple, compact rooms
