Villa Dubrovnik
At dinner time the hotel boat pulls away from the rocks below the terraces and carries you across the water into the old harbour.
White terraces drop in steps from the road to the water, and from almost every level you look out to the walls of the Old Town and the green hump of Lokrum, the wooded island just offshore. Up here the noise of the city never reaches you.
Villa Dubrovnik sits on the cliffs east of town, a little further out than the Excelsior. Instead of a taxi, the hotel sends you to the old harbour by its own boat, which turns an evening out into a short sea crossing.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Villa Dubrovnik
This is our romantic pick. It is quiet, discreet and set in one of the loveliest spots around the city, and the boat means you get both the calm of the cliffs and the life of the Old Town.
It is built for adults. The hotel is spread across many levels linked by stairs and lifts, which is not ideal with small children or a pushchair, and rates sit at the very top of the Dubrovnik market.
