The best hotels in Antalya: six places to stay, old town to beach resort

From the walls above the old harbour in Kaleiçi, you look down on fishing boats packed tight in the basin, and behind them the Taurus Mountains rise straight out of the sea, often still capped with snow in April. Antalya is both an ancient city with Roman gates and the gateway to Turkey's biggest beach resorts. They are two quite different holidays, and your hotel decides which one you get.

To experience the city, its restaurants and history, stay in Kaleiçi or on the cliffs beside it. For sandy beaches, pools and all-inclusive, Lara and Belek east of the city are best. Kemer to the west suits travellers who want clear water, mountains and a little more nature around their resort.

Tuvana Hotel

Kaleiçi

1. Tuvana Hotel

  • Kaleiçi
  • Ottoman houses
  • Courtyard pool
  • Garden restaurant

Ottoman houses around a courtyard

Tuvana Hotel is made up of several old Ottoman houses in Kaleiçi, restored around a courtyard with a pool and shady trees. Rooms have wooden floors, heavy doors and details from the old building style, and the garden restaurant is one of the best in the old town.

This is our design pick and the place to experience the old town from the inside. It is a good fit for couples and lovers of small, personal hotels with history. There is no beach, but the harbour is a few minutes' walk away, and from there boats and taxis reach the beaches.

  • Jet-shaped building
  • Sandy beach
  • All-inclusive

The hotel shaped like a jet

It is right for families and friends who want a resort with a sense of fun and a short transfer from the airport. Children tend to love the building. The style is more entertainment than elegance, and it is large and busy in summer. With the airport so close, you can be in the pool half an hour after landing.

Antalya is Turkey's biggest holiday city, home to more than a million people, with an airport just fifteen minutes from the centre and a coastline running for miles in both directions. At its heart is Kaleiçi, the walled old town, with Ottoman timber houses, narrow lanes, Hadrian's Gate from Roman times and a small harbour tucked beneath the cliffs.

East and west of the city are the resorts where most British visitors stay. Lara and Belek to the east have long sandy beaches, golf courses and vast all-inclusive hotels. Kemer to the west has pebble beaches, clear water and mountains right behind the hotels. Flights from the UK take around four hours. We have chosen six hotels in the old town, the city and along the resort coast, and explain who each one suits. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

How to choose a hotel in Antalya

  • City or resort: city hotels are smaller and rarely have a big beach. The resorts have everything but sit 30 to 60 minutes from the old town.

  • Sand or pebbles: Lara and Belek have sand, Kemer is mostly pebbles with clearer water. Water shoes help in Kemer.

  • All-inclusive is the norm: most resorts sell everything included. Check what that covers, as à la carte restaurants and premium drinks can cost extra.

  • The transfer matters: the airport is close to the city and Lara. Kemer is around an hour away, worth remembering on a late arrival.

  • High summer is very hot: July and August are scorching. With young children or plans to explore the city, May, June and September are often better.

The areas

  • Kaleiçi: Kaleiçi is Antalya's historic heart, a warren of lanes, old timber houses, small hotels in restored mansions and cafés overlooking the harbour. Much of it is car-free, and in the evening it fills with restaurants.

  • The city and Konyaaltı: Along the cliffs east of the old town stand some of the city's best hotels, with views across the bay to the mountains. West of the centre is Konyaaltı, a long pebble beach with a promenade, parks and the archaeological museum.

  • Lara and Belek: East of the city lies Lara, close to the airport, and further out is Belek, known for golf courses, pine forest and long sandy beaches. This is where you find the biggest and best-known all-inclusive resorts.

  • Kemer: West of the city, the coast road runs towards Kemer, with the Taurus Mountains right behind the beaches and pine forest down to the sea. Beaches are pebbly and the water is clear.
