The best hotels in Santorini: seven places to stay, caldera to wine country

Half an hour before sunset, people start lining the walls of Oia. Below them the cliffs drop almost 300 metres to the sea, and the white houses cling to the edge as if they might slide off. When the sun touches the horizon, the whole village goes quiet for a moment. That view is what you pay for in Santorini, which is why location is everything.

For the famous view, stay on the caldera rim in Oia or Imerovigli. Imerovigli is quieter and sits highest, while Oia has the sunsets and the crowds. If you want a beach or a lower price, the south coast at Perivolos or the wine village of Megalochori are better choices.

Canaves Oia

Oia

1. Canaves Oia

  • Caldera view
  • Private pools
  • Cave suites
  • Couples

White suites down the cliff

Canaves Oia is a cluster of white suites and cave houses stepping down the cliff below the village, with pools and terraces facing the caldera. Several suites have their own pool, and the main pool seems to hang over the edge.

It makes an easy first choice, giving you the classic Santorini view, polished service and a location within walking distance of Oia's restaurants. It is right for couples and honeymooners. Rates are high and there are plenty of steps between rooms. In the evening you can watch the sunset from your terrace rather than jostling at the walls above.

Katikies Santorini

Oia

2. Katikies

  • Pools on several levels
  • Classic Cycladic
  • Caldera view
  • Grown-up

Pools in tiers down the slope

Katikies stands in Oia, built in white tiers down the caldera wall, with pools on several levels and views straight out to sea. The style is classic Cycladic, all whitewashed walls, arches and blue water.

It is a strong pick for anyone who wants one of the island's best-known hotels and the view every photograph shows. It is a grown-up hotel, best for couples and friends. Many rooms sit far down the slope, so every trip up to the village means stairs, though the deeper you go the quieter it gets.

Oia, Santorini, Greece

Perivolas

Oia

3. Perivolas

  • Romantic
  • Cave rooms
  • Infinity pool
  • Quiet

Cave houses and a pool that spills into the sky

Perivolas lies on the edge of Oia, in old cave houses converted into rooms and suites with white walls and simple, calm shapes. The pool sits right at the edge of the cliff, so the water appears to flow straight into the sea.

It is our romantic pick, quieter than the hotels in the middle of Oia and more private. It appeals to couples who want peace and the view without much going on around them. Reaching the village restaurants means a stroll along the cliff path, and it is not a place for children.

Oia, Santorini, Greece

Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Oia

4. Mystique

  • Cave suites
  • Wine cellar
  • Caldera terraces
  • Discreet

Hidden in the cliff below Oia

Mystique is tucked into the cliff just south of Oia, with suites carved into the rock and terraces right above the caldera. There is a wine cellar in a cave and several pools with views.

It is well suited to couples who want luxury and discretion, with Oia close when they want it and silence when they do not. Its position low in the cliff means many steps, so ask about transfers up to the village in the evening. Rates sit at the top of the island's range, which makes it one for a special occasion.

Grace Hotel Santorini

Imerovigli

5. Grace Santorini

Clean lines above the caldera

Grace Hotel Santorini sits on the rim at Imerovigli, with crisp white forms, a long pool reaching towards the edge and rooms with large windows over the sea. The style is modern and minimalist.

This is our design pick, a hotel where the view is the whole interior. It suits couples who want contemporary luxury in a quieter village than Oia. Imerovigli has fewer restaurants, so you will often take a taxi to Fira or Oia for dinner. The cliff path from Imerovigli to Oia is one of the best walks on the island, ideally early in the morning.

Astra Suites

Imerovigli

6. Astra Suites

  • Family-run
  • Kitchenettes
  • Caldera pool
  • Longer stays

Calm and family-run in Imerovigli

Astra Suites stands in Imerovigli, with suites and apartments spread down the slope around a pool with caldera views. Rooms are simple and bright, many with a kitchen and terrace.

It is a good fit for travellers who want the caldera view and some peace, with a little more space and a more personal feel than the big luxury hotels. It works well for couples staying a week. As everywhere on the rim there are steps and no beach nearby, but Fira, with the most restaurants and shops, is minutes away by taxi or bus.

Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece

Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort

Megalochori and Perivolos

7. Vedema

  • Families
  • Wine cellar
  • Large pool
  • Megalochori

A village around an old winery

Vedema stands in Megalochori, built around an old winery, with low white houses, lanes and a large pool. It has its own wine cellar and transport to a beach club on the south coast.

It gets our vote as the family pick, because it is flat, spacious and has room for children on an island where many hotels tumble down cliffs. It also suits couples who want quiet, wine and good food. There is no caldera view from the rooms, but you can watch the sunset from Megalochori, ten minutes away.

Megalochori, Santorini, Greece

How Picolo chooses

Our editors pick every hotel and experience themselves, and most of them we have tried. Nobody can pay to be included or ranked higher. When you book through our links, Picolo earns a small commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we write.

Santorini is what remains of a great volcano that erupted around 3,600 years ago. The centre of the island collapsed into the sea and left a caldera, a vast flooded crater ringed by sheer cliffs. Along the rim sit the villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia, their white houses, domes and terraces looking straight out over the water.

It is beautiful, and it comes at a cost. Caldera hotels are expensive, involve a lot of steps and have no beach, and in summer the lanes fill with cruise passengers. The east and south coasts have long beaches of black volcanic sand, and the wine villages inland are calmer and better value. We have chosen seven hotels across the cliff edge and the interior. Vedema in Megalochori has transport to a beach club on the south coast. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

How to choose a hotel in Santorini

  • Caldera views cost more: a caldera-view room can be double the price of one without. Check exactly what you are getting, as sea view is not the same thing.

  • The steps are real: cliff-edge hotels are built down the slope, and you will climb a lot of stairs every day. They are a poor fit for young children or anyone with limited mobility.

  • No beach on the caldera side: the beaches are on the east and south coasts. Stay in Oia or Imerovigli and you will need a car or taxi for a swim in the sea.

  • Cruise ships and sunsets: Oia gets crowded at sunset. Stay there if you want the view from your own plunge pool, otherwise Imerovigli is calmer.

  • The season is short: many hotels close from November to March. Check opening dates before planning a winter trip.

The areas

  • Oia: Oia sits at the northern end of the caldera rim and is the most photographed village on the island. Hotels are built as cave houses down the slope, many with private pools and terraces.

  • Imerovigli: Imerovigli sits between Fira and Oia, at the highest point of the caldera rim. The view is at least as good as Oia's, with fewer people and more calm in the evening.

  • Megalochori and Perivolos: In the south lie the wine villages of Megalochori and Pyrgos, where the vines are woven into low baskets close to the ground to shelter them from the wind. Further east stretch the long black sand beaches of Perissa and Perivolos.

Hotels in Santorini: frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Santorini?

Oia or Imerovigli on the caldera rim for the view, Megalochori for calm and wine, and Perivolos or Perissa for the beach. Imerovigli is quieter than Oia.

Do hotels in Oia have a beach?

No, the caldera side is all cliffs with no beach. The black sand beaches are on the east and south coasts.

Is Santorini good for families?

Cliff-edge hotels have many steps and suit young children poorly. Choose a hotel inland or by the beach instead.

How do you get around Santorini?

Buses link the main villages, but a hire car, quad bike or taxi gives most freedom. Parking in Oia and Fira is difficult in summer.

How many nights do you need in Santorini?

Three or four nights suit most visitors. Many pair Santorini with a quieter island such as Naxos or Milos, a short ferry ride away.
