Dar Said

  • Courtyards
  • Small pool
  • Sea views
  • Blue doors
  • Romantic

Tiled courtyards full of plants, a small pool, and from the roof terraces a view over white houses and blue shutters to the Gulf of Tunis.

Sidi Bou Said is the white and blue village on a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis, half an hour from the capital. Dar Said is one of its old houses, arranged around patios with tiles, potted plants and a small pool.

Climb to the terraces and the village opens out below you: flat white roofs, then the sea. The painted doors and the steep cobbled lanes everyone photographs start at the front door.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we chose Dar Said

We chose Dar Said for couples who want the village after the day visitors have left. In the evening the lanes go quiet, and a terrace above the sea is the best seat in Sidi Bou Said.

This is an old house, so no two rooms are alike and stairs are everywhere. Cars cannot reach the door, which means a walk with your luggage, and summer days in the village can be very crowded.

What you get

A day at Dar Said

Mint tea on the terrace while the village is still empty.
Midday
A walk down to the marina, or a train ride to the ruins of Carthage.
Afternoon
A dip in the courtyard pool through the hottest hours.
Evening
The lanes after the day-trippers have left, with the sea turning dark below.

Questions about Dar Said

Can you drive to Dar Said?

Not to the door. The lanes of Sidi Bou Said are mostly closed to cars, so you park nearby and walk the last stretch with your bags.

Does Dar Said have a pool?

Yes, there is a small pool in one of the courtyards, more for cooling off than for swimming lengths.

Is Dar Said suitable for travellers with limited mobility?

It is not ideal. The house has many stairs and steps between levels, and the village lanes are steep and cobbled.
