Alila Jabal Akhdar
Low stone buildings on the edge of a deep gorge in the Hajar Mountains, with a pool looking out over bare peaks and a sky full of stars.
The silence is the first thing you notice. Alila is built from the same stone as the mountains around it, set along the rim of a canyon, so from a distance it almost disappears into the rock.
Rooms are generous, with big windows that frame the gorge. The hotel leads walks along the old paths between villages on the plateau, and at night the lack of light pollution makes the stars the main attraction.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Alila Jabal Akhdar
We chose Alila for its quiet and its design. It is the place for two nights of walking and doing very little, with the gorge outside your window and a pool that faces the mountains.
The drive from Muscat is long, and the final climb requires a four-wheel drive, so plan the transfer. It gets cold after dark, especially in winter. If you want lots of restaurants and evening buzz, Anantara is a better fit.
