Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel
Bare mountains around a private bay, calm water at the front and a lobby under a dome so high that conversation drifts up into it.
Arrive by road and the bay opens up all at once: rock walls, a curve of sand and the palace at the centre. Inside, the atrium rises into a vast dome, and that sense of scale sets the tone for the whole stay.
The resort is managed by Ritz-Carlton and spreads across wide gardens with several pools and a long beach for guests. Children have their own club, the sea is usually calm, and Old Muscat and the Muttrah corniche are a drive along the coast.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel
This is our family choice in Muscat. There is room to spread out, water gentle enough for small swimmers and enough going on within the grounds that a day without excursions still feels full.
The look is palatial and traditional, not modern or understated. The grounds are large, so walks between room, pool and restaurant take time. If you value design and quiet over space, The Chedi suits you better.
