Baglioni Hotel Luna
You can step off a water taxi, walk straight into the lobby and be at St Mark's Square before your bags reach the room.
Arrive by water and you come in from the canal side, straight off the jetty. Breakfast is served under painted ceilings, with tall windows letting in the light off the lagoon, which makes it hard to rush the second cup.
The hotel sits on a slim lane between St Mark's Square and the San Marco Vallaresso stop, where waterbuses and taxis come and go. Inside it is Venice in its traditional dress, with brocade, gilt mirrors and dark wood.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Baglioni Hotel Luna
We like it for the address. You get the most famous square in the city a minute away, at prices well below the grand hotels on the Grand Canal, and you can slip back for a rest when the crowds are at their worst.
Rooms facing the lane get little daylight and can feel gloomy. Ask for the lagoon or the courtyard side when you book. The area is also the most touristy part of Venice, so do not expect neighbourhood life outside the door.
What you get
