Hotel Brunelleschi
Open the window in the right room and Brunelleschi's dome fills it, close enough to make out single tiles on the roof.
The hotel is built around a round stone tower from the Middle Ages and a former church that is no longer consecrated. It stands in a narrow dead-end lane, a couple of minutes on foot from the cathedral, so the noise of the piazza stays outside.
Inside, the look is warm and traditional: wooden floors, rich colours, nothing minimalist. Book a room with a view and the cathedral dome becomes the backdrop to breakfast, and the tower suite at the top takes that view furthest.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Brunelleschi
We chose it for a first trip to Florence. You sleep at the very centre of the old town, yet the cul-de-sac keeps the nights calm, and dinner in the tower restaurant saves you hunting for a table after a long day of sights.
It is not cheap, and the lanes around the cathedral are crowded from morning to late afternoon. If you want green space, a garden to read in or room to breathe, look across the river or up in the hills instead.
What you get
- Rooms built into a medieval tower

Yes. It lies in a small lane a couple of minutes on foot from the cathedral, and some rooms look directly at the dome across the rooftops.

Surprisingly so for such a central address, since it sits in a dead-end lane away from the main squares. By day the surrounding streets are busy with visitors.
