Alila Villas Uluwatu
An open cabana juts out over the drop, and it may be the best place on Bali to watch the sun go down.
Sit in the cabana at the end of the cliff and there is nothing beneath you but air and water. The resort uses stone and bamboo, low and spare, so that the architecture frames the ocean rather than competing with it.
Every villa has a private pool, and the mood is quiet and grown up. Uluwatu Temple, where the kecak dance is performed at sunset by a chorus of chanting men, is a short drive away.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Alila Villas Uluwatu
This is our romantic pick, mainly for the sunsets. The design is restrained, the villas are private, and the cliff top setting makes every evening feel like an occasion.
It is a long way from everything else, and you need a car for restaurants and beaches outside the resort. If you like to wander out for dinner, this is not the place.
What you get
- Sunset views from the cliff top cabana
- Villas with private pools
- Ocean views from the cliffs
- Short drive to Uluwatu Temple
