Holidays in the Americas: frequently asked questions

Which country in the Americas is best for a first trip?

The USA is the easiest first trip for many travellers, with direct flights from Europe and a huge choice of cities and national parks. For beaches, Mexico's Caribbean coast is a classic, and for nature and adventure, Costa Rica is hard to beat.

Do I need a visa for the USA, Canada or Mexico?

Many European travellers can visit the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme with an approved ESTA, and Canada with an eTA, while Mexico allows visa-free entry for many nationalities. Rules change, so always check official sources before you book.

How long are flights from the UK to the Americas?

Direct flights from London take around eight hours to New York, eleven hours to Los Angeles, ten to eleven hours to Cancún and around fourteen hours to Buenos Aires. Many destinations in Central and South America need a connection.

Can you combine several countries in one trip?

Yes. Popular combinations include New York with a beach in Mexico or the Caribbean, Mexico with Costa Rica or Guatemala, and Buenos Aires with Patagonia or Uruguay. Allow enough time, as distances are much larger than in Europe.
