USA holidays: where to start

The USA is huge, and the best trips focus on one or two regions. City lovers can start with New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, while those who want nature and space should head for the national parks and ranches of Montana.

A road trip is one of the best ways to see the country, and many visitors combine a city break with a few days in the mountains or on the coast. See the wider region in our guide to the Americas.

Cities and film locations

New York is the classic first visit. Find out where to find the best brunch in New York and follow in the footsteps of the Roy family on the filming locations of Succession. In Los Angeles, visit the locations where Barbie was filmed and book a table at one of ten super cosy restaurants in Los Angeles.

Chicago is the metropolis on the third coast, with beaches, theatres and world-class architecture. In the Midwest, St. Louis is full of surprises for first-time visitors, from the Gateway Arch to the City Museum.

Ski resorts, ranches and food

Food is a reason to travel in itself. Discover eight great gluten-free restaurants in the US and meet José, who shares his authentic Mexican dishes and tacos.

Best time to visit the USA

Spring and autumn are lovely for city breaks, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. Summer is the best time for national parks and road trips in the north and the mountains, while winter brings snow to the Rockies and sunshine to California and Florida.

The ski season usually runs from December to April. Book well ahead for Christmas, New Year and the school holidays.
