Omni Amelia Island Resort
Cycle under oaks trailing Spanish moss in the morning, then spend the afternoon on a beach that seems to run forever.
The bikes are lined up outside, and the paths lead off under old oaks with Spanish moss hanging from the branches. Amelia Island sits right at the top of Florida, a short way from Georgia, and the resort here spreads out like a small community of its own.
On the ocean side the beach runs on and on, and between the sand and the trees there are golf courses and several restaurants. It is a different Florida from the one most visitors picture: greener, slower and a long way from Miami Beach.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Omni Amelia Island Resort
We chose it for families who want to spend a holiday outdoors rather than in queues. Bikes, a long beach and space to roam make it easy for children to burn energy, and parents get calm evenings.
North Florida has real winters by local standards, so December to February can be too cool for the beach. The resort is large and spread out, and if you want city life or theme parks, you are in the wrong corner of the state.
