Catalina Canyon Inn
Up the canyon road, away from the ferry crowds, the hills close in around a pool, one of the few you will find anywhere in Avalon.
Walk inland from the harbour and the road climbs into a dry, green valley. Catalina Canyon Inn is up here, with scrubby hillsides on every side and a pool and hot tub, a rare thing in a town where most hotels have neither.
Down by the water Avalon is busy, but the canyon is calmer. Getting to the seafront takes about a quarter of an hour on foot, or a few minutes by golf cart.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Catalina Canyon Inn
We chose it for families and anyone who wants space and a swim without queueing for the beach. The pool alone sets it apart in Avalon, and the quiet nights are a bonus after a day in town.
You give up the harbour view and the step-outside convenience. The walk back uphill after dinner is noticeable, so if you want to be in the middle of things, a seafront hotel will suit you better.
