Pera Palace Hotel
The wrought-iron and wooden lift that carried the first guests still creaks up through the building, past a room named after Agatha Christie.
Step into the old lift, all wrought iron and polished wood, and you are riding the same cage as the hotel’s earliest guests. Downstairs, the tea lounge sits under domed ceilings, and one room upstairs carries the name of Agatha Christie, who reportedly wrote during her stays.
Pera Palace was built for travellers arriving on the Orient Express. It stands in Tepebaşı, and the west-facing rooms look out over the Golden Horn. Istiklal Avenue and the Tünel station are a short walk away.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Pera Palace Hotel
We chose it for the story. Few hotels anywhere let you sleep inside this much travel history, and it is the place for anyone who comes to Istanbul looking for old Europe.
History has a price: bathrooms are smaller and rooms feel more formal than in newer hotels. The street outside is busy, so it is not the calmest address in Beyoğlu.
