Heritance Tea Factory
Iron machinery, long factory windows and tea bushes in every direction: a converted 1930s factory high in Sri Lanka's hill country.
The building gives itself away from a distance: a long industrial block on a ridge at Kandapola, surrounded by green tea slopes. It was a working tea factory in the 1930s, and much of the original machinery was left in place when it became a hotel.
Tea is still made here, and guests can see how the leaves become what ends up in the cup. Nuwara Eliya, the highest town in the hill country, is the nearest place of any size.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Heritance Tea Factory
It is one of the few hotels where the history of the place is the main attraction. If you are curious about tea, there is nowhere better to learn about it.
The altitude makes evenings cold, and the hotel is remote, so you will not be popping into town for dinner. It is a place to stay put for a night or two.
