Fort Bazaar
Shady trees and a pool in the courtyard, and outside the door the old lanes of Galle Fort lead to cafés, shops and the sea walls.
Galle Fort is a walled old town on a headland, built by European traders and now on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Fort Bazaar occupies one of its old merchant houses, with rooms opening onto a courtyard shaded by trees around a small pool.
Step outside and you are in the lanes, among cafés, galleries and small shops. The ramparts that circle the fort are a few minutes away, and that is where everyone ends up in the late afternoon.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Fort Bazaar
We chose Fort Bazaar for travellers who want the town rather than the beach. Everything in Galle Fort is walkable, and the courtyard is a cool retreat at midday.
It is a small hotel in an old building, so rooms and common areas are compact. There is no beach on the doorstep, so add a few days on the coast if sand matters to you.
