Palau de la Mar
Two old palaces made into one, with black, white and marble inside and the shady Parterre gardens just outside the door.
The street outside is calm, the Parterre gardens are a few steps away, and the façades still look like the grand town houses they once were. Hospes joined two of these old palaces into a single hotel and gave the inside a strict, elegant look in white, black and marble.
There is a small spa with an indoor pool for a quiet hour after sightseeing. The cathedral is about fifteen minutes on foot, and the Turia Gardens, the green belt that follows the old riverbed, are close by, along with several of the city’s museums.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Palau de la Mar
We chose it as our design pick. It is a place for couples and anyone who likes historic buildings with a modern hand, and it is close enough to the centre to walk everywhere while staying calm at night.
The pool is small and indoors, so this is not a hotel for lying in the sun. In July and August, when you might want a swim and a lounger, the beach or a hotel with an outdoor pool will suit you better.
