Cap Rocat
An old military fortress on the headland south of Palma, where your room is cut into the rock and the terrace looks straight out to sea.
At night the lights of Palma glitter across the bay, yet behind the old walls it feels like nobody else knows you are here. Cap Rocat was built to guard the entrance to the bay, and the soldiers' quarters are now guest rooms dug into the hillside.
Low, dry coastal scrub grows between the walls, and a saltwater pool sits down by the water. There is no sand: you swim from the rocks, using ladders into the sea, or stay by the pool with a book. Palma is close enough for lunch in the old town and back again before the late afternoon swim.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Cap Rocat
Few hotels in Spain look or feel like this one, and it is close to both the city and the airport. Choose it if you want a stay you will be describing for years rather than another polished resort.
It is expensive, adult in mood and the rooms are unusual in shape and light. Beach lovers will miss the sand, and children will run out of things to do. A car makes trips into Palma much easier.

How far is Cap Rocat from Palma airport?
It is roughly a quarter of an hour by car, which makes it an easy first or last night on the island.
Does Cap Rocat have a beach?
No. The coast here is rock, so you swim from ladders into the sea or use the saltwater pool by the water.
Is Cap Rocat suitable for children?
It is designed for adults. The quiet mood, the unusual rooms and the lack of a beach mean children will have little to do.
