Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid
A garden terrace under old trees, with the Prado next door and the Retiro park a short stroll up the street.
Lunch is served under the trees, and the Paseo del Prado outside fades to a murmur. The garden terrace is the heart of the Ritz, as it has been for generations of Madrid society.
The building has been restored from cellar to roof, and the bedrooms are now light and airy. Step out of the front door and the Prado is your neighbour, with the Thyssen and the Retiro also within an easy walk.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid
For a milestone trip, this is where we would book. It does formal service properly, the setting is hard to match, and if art is the reason for the journey you cannot sleep closer to it.
It is formal and priced accordingly. If you prefer jeans, bar stools and a lively street outside, you will feel out of place here, and the money is better spent in Las Letras or Chueca.
