The road climbs out of Stellenbosch towards Franschhoek, and near the top of the Helshoogte Pass the valley opens up below you. Delaire Graff is a wine estate up here, with lodges set apart from each other, each with a pool of its own and the vineyards stretching away beneath.
Art hangs and stands throughout the estate, from the main building to the gardens. There are two restaurants and a spa, so once you arrive there is little reason to leave, other than a short drive to the tasting rooms of the Cape Winelands.

We chose Delaire Graff for the big occasion: an anniversary, a honeymoon, a milestone birthday. Few places in the Winelands combine this kind of privacy, view and food in one estate.
It is among the most expensive places to stay in South Africa, and the price is hard to justify for a quick stopover. You need a car or a driver to explore the area, and families with young children may find it too formal.
