Mandarin Oriental, Doha

  • Rooftop pool
  • Large spa
  • Msheireb
  • Souq Waqif
  • Stopover

You swim on the roof with the old town below you and the glass towers of West Bay lined up along the horizon.

From the pool on the roof, the view runs over low sandstone streets towards the skyline across the bay. Inside, the rooms set clean shapes against geometric motifs taken from Arab craft, so the hotel feels like it belongs to the city rather than to a brand catalogue.

Msheireb is the rebuilt quarter next to the old market, and it is the part of Doha that rewards walking. A metro station sits in the neighbourhood, which makes a short stay here easy to organise without a car.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we chose Mandarin Oriental, Doha

We chose it for location. On a stopover of a day or two, nothing beats waking up in the part of Doha with the most character, with the souk, the museums and dinner all reachable without a taxi.

There is no sand here and the rates sit at the top of the market. If your Qatar trip is mainly about the sea, a resort in West Bay or on The Pearl will give you more for the money.

What you get
