Torel Avantgarde
A hillside hotel in Miragaia where each room pays tribute to a painter or writer, and the pool terrace looks down on the river.
From the edge of the pool the river curves away towards the sea, and the white arch of the Arrábida bridge sits low on the horizon. Torel Avantgarde clings to the slope in Miragaia, a quieter old quarter west of the Ribeira.
Inside, each floor and each room takes its look from an artist or writer of the last two centuries, so colours and patterns change as you walk the corridors. Digby, the restaurant, shares the terrace and the view.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Torel Avantgarde
Our design choice in Porto. It is playful without being silly, the views reach almost every room, and an evening by the pool watching the light fade over the river is reason enough to book.
You are on a hill, so every outing starts or ends with a climb, and the Ribeira is around fifteen minutes on foot. If you want to step out of the door into the thick of things, choose a hotel in the centre.

How far is Torel Avantgarde from the Ribeira?
It is roughly a quarter of an hour on foot along the river. The walk back is uphill, so many guests take a taxi in the evening.
