Santiago de Alfama
Café tables on a tiny square under the castle walls, and behind them a restored palace where no two rooms look alike.
The hotel fills a palace from the 1400s, right under the walls of São Jorge castle. Out front, a small square holds a few café tables; inside, white walls meet old stone arches, and antiques sit next to modern Portuguese pieces.
Every room is laid out differently, and they are roomier than most in the district. Step outside and the Portas do Sol viewpoint is just downhill, with tram 28 rattling past nearby.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Santiago de Alfama
It suits travellers who want Alfama with a little more space and a lot more quiet. You are surrounded by history, close to the castle and the best viewpoints, yet the hotel itself feels calm.
Alfama is steep, and the hills do not get easier from here. Pushchairs and heavy luggage are hard work on the cobbles, so families with small children may prefer a flatter base on the avenue.
What you get

How close is Santiago de Alfama to São Jorge castle?
Very close. The hotel sits directly below the castle walls, so the entrance is a short, steep walk uphill.
Is Santiago de Alfama good for families?
Older children will be fine, but the steep cobbled streets make pushchairs and heavy bags difficult. Families with toddlers may prefer a flatter area.
Is Santiago de Alfama quiet?
Yes. Although it is in the heart of Alfama, the hotel itself is calm, which is one of the main reasons people choose it.
