Hotel Avenida Palace
A marble lobby, chandeliers and tea in the afternoon, with Rossio station next door and the whole of Baixa laid out flat around you.
Step in from the noise of Rossio and the volume drops. The lobby is all marble and crystal, there is a salon where tea is poured in the afternoon, and the building has kept much of the look it had when it first opened its doors more than a century ago.
Outside, the location does the work. Rossio station is next door for trains to Sintra, the Metro is a minute away, and the flat grid of Baixa means you can reach the river, Chiado and Alfama without starting the day on a hill.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Avenida Palace
We picked it for value. You get the feel of an old grand hotel, generous rooms and a central, level address for less than the newer luxury names in Lisbon charge, and that is rare in a city where prices keep climbing.
The square never really sleeps, so rooms at the front can be noisy: ask for one further inside the building. The décor is traditional and some rooms feel heavy, so look elsewhere if you want something light and modern.
What you get
- Classic grand hotel service
- Afternoon tea in the salon
- Large, traditional rooms
- Next door to Rossio station
- Metro and trains on the doorstep
A day at Hotel Avenida Palace

Is Hotel Avenida Palace close to Rossio station?
Yes. The hotel shares a wall with Rossio station, so trains to Sintra leave from next door, and the Metro and the main squares of Baixa are right outside.
Is Hotel Avenida Palace noisy?
The front faces one of the busiest squares in Lisbon, which stays lively day and night. Rooms deeper inside the building are noticeably calmer, so it is worth asking for one when you book.
Is Hotel Avenida Palace good value?
For a classic grand hotel this central, it tends to cost less than the newer luxury hotels in Lisbon, which is why it is our value pick for the city.
