Bairro Alto Hotel
A rooftop bar above Chiado where locals and guests share the view over the rooftops, the river and the long red bridge.
The hotel sits on Praça Luís de Camões, right on the line between elegant Chiado and the lanes of Bairro Alto. The building has housed a hotel since the 1800s, and the rooms have a calm, grown-up look of dark wood and soft colours.
Go up to the roof at the end of the day. The terrace bar looks out over Chiado to the Tagus and the bridge, and it draws as many Lisbon residents as hotel guests, which tells you something.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Bairro Alto Hotel
For a first trip, this is the address we would choose. Baixa is a short walk downhill, the bars of Bairro Alto a couple of minutes up, and tram 28 stops on the square. You spend less time on hills and more time in the city.
The square is lively late into the night, and rooms at the front hear it. Light sleepers should ask for the back. Bairro Alto itself gets loud after dark, so do not expect village calm.
