Martinhal Sagres
A family resort at the far south-western corner of Europe, where children get their own programme and the beaches are almost deserted outside summer.
The wind comes in off the Atlantic, the light is hard and clear, and the children have already gone off to their club. Martinhal Sagres spreads its villas and rooms through gardens beside the beach, a little way from the small town of Sagres at the very end of Portugal.
Everything here is planned with families in mind. Little ones have a nursery, older children and teenagers have activities of their own, and the adults get a spa and proper meals. Cape St Vincent, the cliff at Europe's south-western edge, is a short drive from the gate.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Martinhal Sagres
We chose it because few resorts in the Algarve take children this seriously without leaving parents short-changed. You get space, nature and several pools, and the west coast beaches are far emptier than those around Albufeira.
Sagres is not the place for a lazy swim. The wind blows often and the Atlantic stays cold even in summer, so if warm sea and calm beaches are the point, look further east along the coast.

Is Martinhal Sagres good for babies and toddlers?
Yes. The resort has a nursery for the youngest guests, and the whole place is set up with small children in mind, from the layout of the villas to the activities through the day.
Can you swim in the sea at Martinhal Sagres?
You can, but expect cold water and frequent wind on this stretch of the Atlantic. Many families use the pools on breezy days and save the beach for calm mornings.
How far is Martinhal Sagres from Cape St Vincent?
The cape is a short drive west of the resort. Go late in the day if you can, when the light softens over the cliffs and the lighthouse.
