Hotel Rubinstein
A roof terrace above Szeroka, the broad square at the heart of Kazimierz, with old synagogues at either end.
Szeroka is less a street than a long, open square, and it is the centre of Kazimierz. The Old Synagogue closes one end, and the Remuh Synagogue with its old cemetery lies close by. Hotel Rubinstein looks straight onto it.
The hotel fills a restored townhouse and takes its name from Helena Rubinstein, the cosmetics pioneer, who grew up in the quarter. Rooms are small and warm with exposed beams, and the roof terrace offers a view few visitors ever get.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Rubinstein
Stay here for Kazimierz at both ends of the day: an empty Szeroka early in the morning, and evenings that finish a few doors from your bed. The restaurant spills out onto the square in good weather.
The quarter gets lively, especially at weekends, and rooms facing the square can hear the restaurants until late. Rooms at the back are the better bet if you plan an early night.
